Researched 2026-10-23 from official sources. Programs change, so confirm with the program before you go.
Short answer: In Los Angeles County you can almost always get rid of a mattress for free. Your options, roughly in order of convenience:
- Have your trash hauler pick it up as a bulky item (free for most residents).
- Drop it at a Bye Bye Mattress collection site (free, run under California's statewide mattress recycling program).
- Bring it to an LA County mattress collection event (free, up to 10 units).
- Have the store take it back when a new mattress is delivered.
Don't leave it on the sidewalk unless you have scheduled a pickup.
