The short version
- Check the paperwork first. You need the title (pink slip) in your name. If it's lost, apply for a duplicate before you sell or junk the car.
- If it still runs, check for a retirement payment. In California the Bureau of Automotive Repair pays eligible owners to retire a car that can still be driven. See the California guide for the current amounts.
- If it doesn't run, compare a licensed dismantler, a charity and online buyers. Check the buyer's license before you hand over the title.
- Tell the DMV you no longer own it. In California, file a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability within 5 days.
